An ANZAC Pilgrimage
So got home to grey skies and rain, after a week of travelling around Turkey.
The next day we went for a massive walk to the Grand Bazaar. Finally made it to the Grand Bazaar and we were in love instantly. There were colours everywhere, plates, shisha stalls, jewellery, glass, lanterns, carpets, leather, everything, so amazing, we spent up big and didn't regret a second of it. It was so much fun bargaining with the shop owners, they all spoke English and were keen to hear about Australia and where we were from, so in each shop, they sat us down and got us a glass of apple tea and made us spend our money there, they are clever.
The next morning we had an early bus trip to Gallipoli, massive bus ride, got to Anzac Cove at about three in the arvo, the sun was out, almost everyone has been living in London, so we enjoyed the sunshine for a couple of hours, before the sun went down, after a beautiful sunset we started to freeze, they told us it was going to be -4 degrees, so we were all rugged up and in our sleeping bags on the grandstand for hours of sitting around waiting for the sun to come out again. Lucky it didn't rain!!
The dawn service was amazing, when they played the Last Post, I don’t think there was a dry eye, very moving. After that we did a massive trek up a mountain to Lone Pine, where they held the Aussie service, the sun was out, but still freezing and windy as well. Finally after waiting for hours and hours our bus picked us up at like 3pm, something crazy, all we wanted to do was sleep!!
We then spent the next day seeing this cool place, can't remember the name...where there was a theatre cut into the hillside that looks out onto the most amazing view of the whole city and lots of green countryside. It was beautiful.
Went back to Istanbul had drinks with the whole tour group then the next day spent in Istanbul doing a tour of the city, saw the Blue Mosque, Underground Cistern and took about a million photros again.
Oh, and the sun came out yesterday, I was wearing a T-shirt and Mel, Emma and I went on a picnic in the park!!
