Improve your skills, increase your chance of placement

The impact of the global financial crisis became clear during the 2009 Summer Camp USA season. For the first time, competition for camp placements was extremely high as camp directors become increasingly selective with their recruitment.

Camp directors have always responded well to summer camp applications that show strong experience with children and specialised activities. Taking this a step further and showing you have gained accreditation for your chosen activities makes your application even more impressive. But how do you gain this sort of accreditation?

The following is a list of organisations that offer certification or the opportunity to gain experience working with kids. Your involvement with any of these organisations will boost your chances of securing a camp placement for 2010.

Outward Bound:
The best way to gain some serious outdoor adventure experience and qualifications is through Outward Bound. From kayaking and abseiling to rock climbing and trekking, Outward Bound’s courses offer awesome experience that will definitely come in handy at Summer Camp USA. www.outwardbound.org.au

AUSTSWIM: Swimming teachers are highly sought after by camps and through AUSTSWIM you can become a certified swimming teacher with a strong understanding of water safety. www.austswim.com.au

Lifeguarding: With so many waterfront activities, there is a high demand for qualified lifeguards to keep a close eye on kids frolicking in the water. Completing a short course before departing Australia will equip you with valuable lifeguarding skills.

Experience with kids:
School holiday camps as well as after school care can provide you with child care experience that will help prepare you for your American summer camp experience.

First aid & CPR: When kids are at camp involved in lots of physical, outdoor activities, accidents do happen. Knowing how to handle a simple medical situation can come in very handy.

Boat license: If you’re a keen water-skier or wake-boarder, increase your chances of placement in these areas by obtaining a boat license.

No matter what activity you’re interested in teaching at camp there is probably an organisation that you can contact for certification. If you would like a more extensive list of companies that run courses call the Summer Camp USA team on 1300 300 912 or email summercampusa@iep.org.au
