BRITISH INSPIRATION

TOP TIPS FOR THE UK

1. Go to your IEP/BUNAC orientation -- You’ll learn everything that you need to know about living and working in the UK and we’ll start getting you sorted with a bank account, National insurance number and all the other necessities.

2. Get a bank account sorted as soon as you get there -- Most employers will pay you into a bank account, or they will pay you with a cheque which you will then have to deposit in to a bank account. You may have heard that setting up a bank account in the UK can be a real hassle- but don’t worry because as an IEP member you will receive priority assistance and all the necessary documentation to open an account without the drama.

3. Get a job before you find a place to live -- Use all of IEP/BUNAC’s resources to find yourself an awesome job. After that, you’ll have a pretty good idea of where you should live - in terms of how far you’re willing to travel to get to work. BUNAC can also help you find long-term accommodation when you’re ready to get settled.

4. Find work as quickly as possible - Australian dollars don’t go very far when you convert them into pounds so it’s a good idea to start earning the local currency as soon as possible.

5. Get out of London! There so much more to see than the capital of England! Get out of the city and see some of the countryside- your visa allows you to work anywhere in England, Northern Ireland, Wales or Scotland, so make the most of it! BUNAC has employment and accommodation contacts all over the UK so you can make the most of your two years away.

6. See Europe. Living and working in the UK allows you the unique opportunity to explore Europe… it’s just a cheap, short flight to some of the most vibrant and exciting places in the world. BUNAC can tell you how to do it cheaply, and may even organise group trips that you can get in on!

7. Visit the Scottish highlands: The mountains, waterfalls and lochs of the highlands provided the spectacular backdrop for the battles and adventures that shaped Scottish history. It’s impossible not to be enthralled by the stories (and even better when they’re told with an acent).

8. Don’t forget the holiday part! Lots of people get a job as soon as they get to the UK and get so caught up in work that they forget to travel and see the rest of the country! Make sure this doesn't happpen to you and take time out to see the rest of what the UK has to offer!

9. Catch a festival (or three) - The UK is famed for its festivals, which run year-round. For advice from the locals, chat to the team at BUNAC when you get to the UK.

EUROPEAN INSPIRATION

We've got plenty of that!

If you're looking for reasons to get over to the UK have you considered any of the following:

  • Having a highland fling with a cute Scot (and finding out what they REALLY wear under those kilts).
  • Sunbathing in an English park (yes, they have sun) and planning your night out in London at one of the best clubs in the world.
  • Dance until dawn at one (or more) of the best clubs in the world - sample the nightlife in London, Edinburgh, Dublin and beyond! Europe is the recognised leader in nocturnal amusement so get out there and make some discoveries! For tips on the best places to play around the world, check out staff profiles.
  • Sample the monopoly board of sights in London- make a phone call from a red phone booth, see the changing of the guard at Buckingham palace.

IEP prides itself on keeping you informed of important facts and figures - for example did you know:

  • 31 Brits have died since 1996 by watering their Christmas tree while the fairy lights were plugged in.
  • 18 Brits had serious burns in 2000 trying on a new jumper with a lit cigarette in their mouth.
