THE UK WORKING HOLIDAY VISA

FAQ’s and Answers for the UK Youth Mobility Scheme

How long will it take to process my application?

Processing times for visa applications under the new system are currently unavailable. The British High Commission and IEP strongly recommend that you keep your travel plans as flexible as possible until the British High Commission has reached a decision about your visa application.

The British High Commission will hold onto your passport throughout the entire visa processing time so it is really important that you don’t book any non-refundable flights or tours until your visa is confirmed. You will want that visa in your hand before you commit yourself to travel plans

I’m planning on travelling early next year. When should I apply?

The British High Commission will only accept visa applications from those entering the UK within the next 3 months.

When will the new visa changes be applicable from?

November 27, 2008.

How long can I work for?

Participants will be able to undertake employment in the UK for as much of their stay as wished, therefore be able to work the entire 2 year length of the visa if desired.

What is the “Points-Based System’ made up of? What are the criteria?

The Youth Mobility Scheme falls under Tier 5 of the new Points-Based system. The Points-Based system requires applicants to achieve a minimum number of ‘points’ before the application will be assessed by the British High Commission. You must score 50 points from the sponsorship, age and maintenance categories.

Sponsorship

To gain points for the Sponsorship section you simply need to hold an Australian passport.

Age

You must score 10 points in this category. You will be awarded these points if you are aged 18 at the time your application or under the age of 31 on the date your application is made.

Maintenance

You must score 10 points in this category. You must show that you have at least £1600 that you can use to support yourself while in the United Kingdom.

I’m currently on a working holiday in the UK; can I apply for the new visa? Will the new changes affect me?

If you are currently on or have previously had a working holiday visa, you are unable to participate in the Youth Mobility Scheme. If you are currently on a working holiday visa, the new changes will not apply to you. Unfortunately you are still only able to work for 50% of your stay in the UK or a maximum of 12 months.

Has the age criteria changed?

Yes, applicants must be aged between 18 – 30 (previously 17 – 30)
