RECRUITING AUSSIES FOR THE CANADIAN ROCKIES
Every year when IEP offers the Work & Ski Canada Job Fairs hundreds of Australians are thrilled to be offered jobs, accommodation and awesome seasonal benefits all before even leaving Australia, getting them well ahead of the pack of people going to the Canadian Rockies every winter.
What they don’t realise is there are a bunch of Canadian employers flying home after the job fairs, very satisfied with the new team of staff they have just recruited to join them for the upcoming season. With employers and IEP members equally stoked, IEP staff can’t help being stoked as well!
We sat down with Adam from Panorama Mountain Village and Kim from the Banff Centre and asked them, why on earth do they come all the way Down Under to fill some of their best positions?
ADAM from PANORAMA
I come all the way to Australia to meet people in person, we have tried phone interviews and there are always problems like time zones for instance. We also find by hiring a mixture of international people we get a higher quality of staff.
There are a number of factors we look for in applicants. Eagerness, maturity and we want people who are coming over for the right reasons. We want those people who are coming over for the experience and not just to make money. When you live in a country you tend to take it for granted, which is why we like hiring international staff too.
Why Panorama?
Because it’s the best place to work! Panorama is referred to as a big, little resort which means it has a lot going on but it won’t be over run with people which is great if you are wanting to learn to ski or want that extra space on the mountain. Everyone is there for the same reasons, the lifestyle, the atmosphere.

Why IEP?
IEP approached us originally but we keep coming back because IEP has worked with us, listening to our requests and always working at improving the program and recruitment process.

Australians have a very similar work ethic and they seem to be quite confident travellers so it’s nice to have a cool group of staff that are like-minded that come to Canada to work and play.
We’re looking for applicants with a good attitude and commitment to fulfil the work term. Also people who are willing to be flexible and step outside of their comfort zones and learn new skills.
BANFF EH?
It’s a nice community. It has a great work/life balance and it has a real leading edge as it is a little town with everything that you need, three mountains nearby and Calgary with a major international airport only an hour and a half away. You’re in this fantastic little town but you are still in the Rocky Mountains.
IEP EH?
The IEP program is very well organised and IEP does its best to match candidates with employers.
WHY STAY ON FOR SUMMER?
It’s the lifestyle opportunities, hiking and mountain biking in the summer and snowboarding in the winter. I love the variety of seasons, every few months you feel like a different person and I like the work/life balance that Canadians tend to promote.
