IRISH INSPIRATION

Ireland has its fair share of quirks too!

  • Windmills always turn counter-clockwise. Except for the windmills in Ireland.
  • The longest bar in the world is in Ireland, it is the Grandstand Bar at the Galway Racecourse. It measures 210ft long.
  • 21 American Presidents have been of Irish descent
  • Drink a pint of Guinness with a local in Dublin (and try to decipher the accent as they tell you all their stories).

TOP TIPS FOR IRELAND

1. Go to your IEP/USIT orientation -- You’ll learn everything that you need to know about living and working in Ireland - including help with writing a resume and cover letter. We’ll start getting you sorted with a bank account, PPS number and all the other necessities.

2. Get a bank account sorted as soon as you get there -- Most employers will pay you into a bank account, or they will pay you with a cheque which you will then have to deposit in to a bank account. You may have heard that setting up a bank account in Ireland can be a real hassle - but don’t worry because as an IEP member, USIT will provide you with heaps of information about how to go about setting up your bank account. You should have your account up and running within one week.

3. Get a job before you find a place to live -- Use all of IEP/USIT’s resources to find yourself an awesome job. After that, you’ll have a pretty good idea of where you should live - in terms of how far you’re willing to travel to get to work. USIT can also help you find long-term accommodation when you’re ready to get settled.

4. Get around: There’s more to Ireland than Dublin and under the Irish working holiday visa rules, you can only work for the same employer for up to six months. So make the most of your year away by working your way around this spectacular country. Galway city, for example - is Ireland’s student capital and the nightlife doesn’t get any better! Pack your dancing shoes and prepare to make some new friends. IEP’s partner in Ireland, USIT, can provide you with job and accommodation contacts all over Ireland so make the most of it!

5. See the Book of Kells: This ornately illustrated manuscript was produced by Celtic monks around AD 800 and contains the four books of the gospel in Latin. It’s on permanent display at the Trinity College Library in Dublin and is renowned for its exquisite calligraphy and illustration.

6. Get cultural: W.B. Yeats, Oscar Wilde, James Joyce… Ireland is as famous for producing writers as it is for producing Guinness so while you’re there get an insight into Ireland’s literary history at one of the many museums, libraries and galleries that are devoted to all things bookish.

7. Learn about the national drink: 10 million glasses of the stuff are served every day, so it’s definitely worth seeing where it all began. The self-guided tour tells you the history of Guinness and ends with a free pint that you can enjoy in the Gravity bar, surrounded by a 360 degree view of the city. USIT organises social events and nights out with other participants from all over the world (ready made friends!)

8. Shop and be seen on Grafton St, Dublin: by day it’s a hub for serious shoppers and after dark it’s worth checking out the nightlife that is clustered nearby.
